Although we expect our patients to visit us without any worries, we are aware that some patients are anxious about dental treatment.
If you are anxious about your dental visits we can offer sedation. Our staff have undergone additional training in the care and of anxious patients and in particular the use of advanced sedation techniques.
Intravenous sedation - Sedation is a common and safe procedure to reduce anxiety. The sedative drug we use will make you feel calm and relaxed and you may fall into a natural type of sleep. You will be able to communicate with the dentist throughout but you will probably not remember parts of the treatment. This is not the same as having a general anaesthetic, but to many patients it feels similar.
The dentist will administer the sedative drug in your arm or back of the hand and once you are relaxed will numb the treatment area in your mouth. Once treatment is complete you will be able to rest in our recovery room until you are ready to be escorted home.
Inhalation sedation - Sedation is a common and safe procedure to reduce anxiety. The dentist will administer a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a nose piece which will make you feel calm and relaxed. You will be able to communicate with the dentist throughout treatment. You will recover within about 20 minutes and be able to drive home afterwards.
